Thanks.  There's one data point.  Now it's evidently nothing in the
code, as it fails exactly the same way with 4.0-STABLE OpenSSH,
-CURRENT OpenSSH, and my latest port update OpenSSH.

I have no idea what it could be now.  I suppose I'll investigate problems
with XFree86 itself now :-/  This is extremely weird.
