ted,
i edited the file /etc/ld.so.conf and added the line
/usr/local/lib/mysql but i still have the same results.

scott,
if i say "ldconfig -r" i don't get anything that looks like:

311:-lmysqlclient.6 => /usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.6

        312:-lmysqlclient.10 =>
/usr/local/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient.so.10

but i still find a directory : /usr/local/lib/mysql
with files like : libmysqlclient.a,libmysqlclient.so and
libmysqlclient.so.10

i tried
bash-2.03# ldconfig -m /usr/local/lib/mysql
ldconfig: /usr/local/lib/mysql: ignoring group-writable
directory

i rebooted but :'-(

Tom,

what umask would you suggest?
isn't it maybe because it is looking for mysqlclient.10
(shared library "mysqlclient.10" does not exist) while in
the actual lib directory(/usr/local/lib/mysql) there is
instead libmysqlclient.so.10 ?

i am still stuck and can't go forward :(

thanx in advance for your help!
