Um, even if so, the default PREFIX is /usr/X11R6 for xv and /usr/local
for gs so I'm afraid that won't work.  And just because a user is
using a certain value of PREFIX for xv doesn't mean she used it the
same thing for other programs anyway.

The only way (that I can think of) to reliably handle this is to write
a script which uses "which" to find gs, and use the default location
if it's not found.  I'll write it if I ever get to it....
