All right

I am running 2 quad core 1.7MHz Xeon and 16 GB ECC RAM.

Stuff like openjdk7 / openjdk8 / Webitgtk is

Any pointers to rectify this issue?

Snipping the basketcase signature as well... But try not using all cores to build in parallel. The more compilation units being built at the same time, the more memory.
