In my humble opinion (I'm somewhat new at this). I tried FreeBSD, OpenBSD,
NetBSD in that order, and finally settled on FreeBSD.

FreeBSD's easy to use and has all the bells & whistles, best documentation,
and seems to be a little more conservative with it's components (eg. still
uses tried&true Xfree86 3.3.6... which is good, I couldn't get 4x to work)

Openbsd's default install is very secure (so secure that I could not
configure it to send or receive any mail). This one's not for beginners, I
gave up trying to make it do anything useful...

NetBSD's default install is sparse, but it runs on just about anything!
