The "whole activation thing" required about three seconds of my time.

I needed a compatible version of Windows for my scanner.

That would have cost more than Windows XP Home Edition, and it would have
required more of my time.  Since I wasn't particularly keen to install 2000
over XP, anyway, it didn't make much difference to me (they both have
similar architectures, in any case).
