There's a missing step here.  You should reboot into single user mode it
at all possiable between these two steps.  This allows you to be sure
your kernel actually works before installing the associated work.  If it
doesn't it's a simple matter of reverting to kernel.old where as it's
quite difficult to undo an installworld.
