Argl, YES, swap _is_ the first partition: $ bsdlabel ad0s1 # /dev/ad0s1: 8 partitions: # size offset fstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg] a: 307200 1048857 4.2BSD 2048 16384 0 b: 1048576 0 swap c: 156296322 0 unused 0 0 # "raw" part, don't edit d: 155247730 1048592 vinum As you can see, first comes swap, then the rest of the drive is dedicated to vinum.
