Try using ping. Ping a host on the internet like your school's machine 
every 30 seconds or so.

Add functionality to your kermit dial script to drop connection and 
redial if you don't get a 28.8 connect or find out the "true" number of a 
few of the 28.8 lines and dial them directly.
