I think it's some incompatibility between BSDI and FreeBSD versions
of NIS.  I assume you're using NIS[+].

As a work around, you can create local accounts for the users that
*must* have the Netscape mailer.

You might also try using the Linux version of Netscape in Linux
compatibility mode.  I have yet to try this.
