I'm looking at the example ppp.conf file:

/etc/ppp/ppp.conf

       1 default:
       2 set device /dev/cuaa0
       3 set speed 9600
       4 disable lqr
       5

On my system, there is no /dev/cuaa0. There is a /dev/cua00 though. Is this
what was intended?
