Enable something like async logging and see if ppp has ``crashed'' or 
if the other side has stopped responding.  If it's the other side, 
you'll need to take it up with your ISP (someday, someone will find 
an ISP that's willing to co-operate!).

If it's ppp, you'll need to be a bit more specific....
