I've had a voodoo3 running quite well with Direct Rendering =
Infrastructure
(DRI) and Glide 3.  The following URL leads to good information:

(Watch out for the typo though 'ports/graphics/linux-dri' should be -
ports/graphics/linux_dri)

If you just want a GUI for now you'll get good results using the tdfx =
driver.

You assumed correctly :)

The tdfx section from the Linux /etc/X11/XF86Config file should work.
