Linking with gcc42 gives the same errors.  Also, I should note, it was
gfortran42, which linked without errors:

>/usr/ports/math/R/work/R-2.5.0/src/main$ gfortran42 -std=gnu99
-export-dynamic -L/usr/local/lib -o R.bin Rmain.o -L../../lib -lR
