I've been wondering about that, too, but then it's been working for
years and

  CONFIGURE_ARGS+=--datadir=${DATADIR} --verbose ...

looks pretty innocent, doesn't it?  Or is the concept of FreeBSD's
${DATADIR} so different from GNU's --datadir?
