I spent a bit of time narrowing down why. I'd previously noted that an empty loader.conf was sufficient to get it to boot again. After some experimentation I discovered that this line in loader.conf: sound_load="YES" made the boot with the old loader fail (loading the sound module after booting seems to work ok). The box is an Asus a8vx with amd64 x2 3800+, running i386. regards Mark
