No this does not take care of the problem during a fresh install.

Gnome still fails.

However, I re-installed it a second time with pkg_add -f
fontconfig-xxx and it would then work properly.

Bizarre.  I have verified that I burned the right copy of the package
on to the CD by inspecting it and seeing the -f flag added to
+INSTALL.

Any ideas?
