It sounds like your getty is arguing with the modem. Try ATE0Q1&W0 to
turn of echoing, etc. You may want to do this from DOS. Use hardware
flow control (&K3) and &D3 to reset on DTR drop. Also set &C1.

Be sure you're using the correct entries in gettytab and ttys.
