bind 4 is tightly integrated with the OS (resolver routines in libc)
and bind 8 is just a normal program.  

So with 4.9.6 you should (have to ?) recompile all programs using the
resolver after installing the update.  With 8.1.1 you will need
to change your configuration to use named.conf instead of named.boot
and convert named.boot to named.conf using the supplied utility
   bin/named/named-bootconf.pl
