What defines ulimit -d's upper limit?

When I try to raise it, it doesn't appear to move:

	# ulimit -d
	524288
	# ulimit -d 1000 ; ulimit -d
	1000
	# ulimit -d 999999999999 ; ulimit -d
	524288
	# ulimit -d unlimited ; ulimit -d
	524288

My system:
	$ uname -a
	FreeBSD chkno.net 4.7-STABLE FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE #0: Sun Nov
	10 02:31:58 PST 2002 root@chkno.com:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/CHK i386
	$ grep memory /var/run/dmesg.boot
	real memory  = 536870912 (524288K bytes)
	avail memory = 516456448 (504352K bytes)
	$ swapinfo
	Device 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Type
	/dev/ad1s1b        524000    63100   460900    12%    Interleaved
	/dev/ad1s2b        524160    62872   461288    12%    Interleaved
	Total             1048160   125972   922188    12%
