I did a source upgrade from 3.4-STABLE to 4.0-RELEASE using the instructions
in src/UPDATING.  If you do a source upgrade MAKE SURE you follow the
instructions to the letter.  You might also look in the archives as several
people posted instructions on their websites.  These can be used to augment
the instructions in UPDATING if you want clarification.  In particular, if
you go to -RELEASE, I believe the instructions were presented in a rather
confusing format (placing subsets of instructions out of order, for
instance.)
