On Sqwindows '95,  some colors are created by using a pixel-by-pixel
stipple pattern of different "solid" colors.  Sometimes this is done
even if the video depth is set to 16 (a non-pallette mode).  Could this
be happening in X?  Maybe there is an xbm or xpm -based grey involved.
