You may have a mixture of teTeX and the other TeX packages. That will cause all sorts of strange things. My suggestion (this is what I did to clean up my own goof) is to deinstall _ALL_ TeX distributions and install _either_ teTeX, or all the other TeX distributions. I like the teTeX distribution, myself.
