I turned off compression on the zroots of the two machines. This appeared to
work and function as well as one might hope.

I ran the full test all the way though on a 8GB memory system with one older
harddrive. Took hours, no crashes.

I ran the test on a more modern machine with an SSD (really, not that moder=
n,
but faster) and it didn't seem to have any issues. I killed the test part w=
ay
through the rewrite stage to make it usable.

Not sure why I couldn't reproduce this.
