I would say SCTP is of interest; it allows a number of interactions to be treated together for addressing, authentication and congestion control, but to be decoupled from each other in terms of flow control. Coda has homegrown RPC2, which almost starts to feel like its trying to do what SCTP does. But, SCTP is not yet very widely implemented. So while I think it's a good goal, it's not an answer to how many TCP streams :-)
