Things to watch out for:

Be sure to avoid the WinTV 404, stick with the ones listed on the FreeBSD
web page (is it still up?). The 404 uses the BT898 chip instead of the BT848.

Make sure you have a decent video card. I started with a recent Trident (no
name), and could never get anything to work. Now I have an older ATI, and
so far things appear to be working for the most part.
