	Have you tried typing the full pathname

	/usr/local/jdk1.1.8/bin/javac javafile

	If /usr/local/jdk1.1.8/bin is not in your path, echo $PATH to find out, then you'll
probably have problems.  Can you compile when you are logged in as a normal user?
