have a look at the xine project (xine.sourceforge.net), aside from the
problem with video cd reading that we currently have on freebsd (i will
definitely work on this after my test at university today) we can play
mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 quite nicely.

and no, bktr won't help you with anything mpeg, i think.
