So, what does

uname -a

say ?

What does

freebsd-version -ku

say ?

Can you try to do these steps to get to a slightly newer version first ?

freebsd-update -r 9.3-RELEASE upgrade
# installation kernel
freebsd-update install
shutdown -r now
# installation userspace
freebsd-update install
# pkg-update
freebsd-update install
