For me it worked and stoped because of a missing /boot/kernel/kernel.ko. no magic as the kernel got installed without ending in .ko ;( boot from cdrom - I got it working with burning the 100M disk from another alpha onto a cdrom. If you have a fixit cdrom it's much easier.
