The easiest way to do this is to define a 200mb / partition and that way
the space is shared among all partitions.  It can be a pain if you ever
need to newfs and want to save your config files, but at least this way every
spare byte can be used by /usr.  You should be able to get away with
doing a Custom install under sysinstall and choosing the "Minimal"
distribution set instead of the typical "User" or whatever.  Then go
ahead and install only the base DES stuff and you should be able to
untar ports.  Then in the post-install configuration menu select
"Install additional distribution sets" or whatever the exact name is and
under that go to "Custom" and check the box for src-sys.  That's it!
You could try fooling around with PicoBSD but I warn it's not for the
feint of heart and if you asked this question here, PicoBSD's config
might overwhelm you.
