Well, there's old popclient, which I had to use for a while when
fetchmail froze looking at the server.  Unfortunatly, popclient isn't
maintained anymore and is becoming fairly difficult to find. 

What problems are you having with fetchmail?  Sending mail to yourself
locally not working?  That one has bitten many people who like to set
sendmail_enable = "NO" for security reasons, but you can always set your
mda to /usr/libexec/mail.local $USERNAME in your .fetchmailrc
