Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to ask for help with make failing to build the GENERIC kernel
supplied with the 2.7.1-RELEASE of FreeBSD.

Some details

HW 486 Micronics Mother Board
   8 MB RAM
Connor Peripherals HDD ~ 400 MB (FreeBSD only)

Has hosted 2.00 for 18-24 months as a terminal server faultlessly

2.7.1 Installation

ftp from ftp2.au.freebsd.org via Ethernet/firewall (also FreeBSD) upgrade
installation performed faultlessly ie

/etc/resolv.conf preserved

perl, expect, tcl binaries still execute

The error

loading kernel
if_ether.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
if_ether.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
if_ether.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
if_ether.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
if_ether.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
ip_input.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
ip_input.o: Undefined symbol `_inet_ntoa' referenced from text segment
userconfig.o: Undefined symbol `_strncmp' referenced from text segment ***
Error code 1

History

Previously attempted to make a custom kernel with options COM_MULTIPORT and
sio2-5 and sio6-9 (AST compatible mutiport 16450s)

the result was much the same (ie the same undefined symbol as well as one
for _sio??) so I

/usr/sbin/config GENERIC
cd ../../compile/GENERIC
make

produced the failure.

Please let me know what to do. I use this terminal server to host an expect
script that monitors an X25 switch for idel international data calls our
mainframe doesn't clear properly.

Thank you very much for a great product.

Thank you for your encouragement and earnestness to see that a useful
stable and powerful product is not swallowed by vapour-ware.
