I figured out the problem.  It was just a matter of getting the right
settings on the card.  I hadn't actually tried setting the media to
10baseT/UTP without full-duplex -- the card was on autoselect when I
tried it before the full-duplex setting.  Forcing the media to
10baseT/UTP with no mediaopt set seems to have fixed it.
