Thankyou Marc!

I just went to www.freebsd.org and checked it out, and then went to the
homepage ( satoshi asami has done a spectacular job with the ports
stuff! )

now i know what you meant about the nihongo! the homepage is in japanese!

but what little english i saw mentioned that it supports AMD-3dNow
optimizations, which i expect are dang similar to the MMX things.

so i suspect that your original postulation about assembly code may be on
the right track, but i imagine that it was done with a library of some
kind.

maybe it wont even work on a non Amd3d now or MMX aware computer????
