Egads, man!  Even as much as _I_ love perl, it's not always
the right hammer for that nail!  Leif, this is a slight update
to what I gave you already.

Make a suitable inetd entry, and use this:

#! /bin/sh

echo "+OK FAKEPOP"
read userline
echo "+OK Password required"
read passwordline
echo "-ERR Change your server to use pop.realhost.com"
