I have just tried your suggestion.  Unfortunately it does not work. After
I input the password, the gnome-session seems working.  But after a longer
while than before, it comes back to the XDM login window again.  Maybe I
should add something like afterstep in some configuration file as well.

One good thing I just find is that I can press ctrl+alt+f1 to switch to
other virtual terminal. Then I can kill xdm using vt03.
