I'm using completely up-to-date ports - I update fairly often, once a
week or so.

   I run Galeon with sawfish all the time, and I never see a lockup.  What
   versions of the GNOME ports do you have?  Did you install from ports or
   packages?  You may have better luck updating to the latest version of
   GNOME from ports.
