Now the kernel does not panic, but "mount" does not return.
 That's the on-screen log with "boot_verbose=yes":

 $ mount /cdrom
 acd0: TIMEOUT - READ_BIG retrying (2 retries left)
 acd0: unknown transfer phase
 ata0: reiniting channel ..
 ata0: reset tp1 mask=03 ostat0=d0 ostat1=d0

 acd0: FAILURE - ATAPI_IDENTIFY timed out

 ad0: timeout sending command=ec
 ad0: error issueing ATA_IDENTIFY command
 ad0: timeout sending command=ec
 ad0: error issueing ATA_IDENTIFY command
ad0: WARNING - removed from configuration

after the "ad0: WARNING - removed from configuration" message, I do not get
 the shell prompt.
However, pressing ^C seems to unblock "mount", but then I cannot eject the cd
 (combo seems locked).
 Successive mounts blocks indefinitely.

PS: I recompiled only the kernel with sources downloaded yesterday night
(CEST), and I think I do not need to recompile also the "world" (it tooks 4
hours...), correct? let me know otherwise.
