Ah! (bangs head against wall!)   Yes I do:-

in ~/.bashrc  

LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/lib:/usr/local/share/squeak/3.7-7"

Having removed that realplayer comes up with no problem.

Should have spotted that one :-(
