That's why we have been pushing for PREFIX-clean ports!  Once we get
them where we want (in its own tree), creating a bunch of symlinks is
easy.  ("man lndir")

 * Also, we've been talking about reducing the number of inodes in
 * the port skeletons, whereas this will (at least) double the number
 * of them for installed programs.

Number of files and directories in port skeletons is a problem because
there are a bunch of small files.  Installed software have much bigger
average file sizes so this is not that much of a concern.
