Okay, I'm running 2.1.0-rel and xfree 3.2 in 8bpp mode with no problems, but according to the instruction manual of my graphics card (ET4000/W32p-PCI/VLB chipset, apparently :-) it is capable of doing up to 32 bpp in certain restricted resolutions with the 1MB of video ram I currently have. However, when I try and force X to start up in a higher resolution (either with the -bpp option or by adding a DefaultColorDepth line in XF86Config), it refuses to start up and dies with a message along the lines that my chipset does not support that color depth. Has anyone run into this problem before, and (even better) worked out how to solve it? I can provide more detailed information on my setup and exactly what the various things aretelling me if required. Also, I've never been able to get XF86_W32 to start properly on me (I'm using XF86_SVGA), even though as far as I can tell my chipset is supported. The server will switch to graphics mode and appears to flip around between some different modes (characteristic "switching" noises from the monitor), then after a few seconds the monitor powers down and won't turn back on until I reboot. Is this just the fault of my monitor, or something else? Many thanks, Kris || ,-./\ Kris Kennaway || "Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead. || ||/ \ || Dead. Dead. Dead.
