Thanks for all the suggestions.  I don't know exactly what fixed it, but here's
what I did...

1) Got the linux_base from the packages on ftp.freebsd.org, and installed it.
2) Made a new kernel configuration file off the GENERIC kernel, and installed it.
(this may be the module rebuild that Mr. Saxon was talking about, because I did
see it make it)
