 Yes - 

   I found that the 3.1 X11 a.out compatibility libraries weren't
  right (that's where the reference was coming from.)

   For my own work-around, I grabbed a 2.2.8 CD, extracted the X11
  shared libraries from there, and installed them in /usr/X11R6/lib/aout.

   That solved the problem of running 2.2.x programs.
