 What userid are you doing this as?  grep(1) /etc/group and
 /etc/passwd for majordom and tell me what it says.  Is your
 /etc/group file huge?  Since I can't reproduce the problem
 here, can you add a couple of debug prints to the createuser
 script and see where it is falling over?
