Try this instead

device ed? at pci?

This got my Realtek detected as ed0, and everything works fine.

ed0: <NE2000 PCI Ethernet (RealTek 8029)> rev 0x00 int a irq 5 on
pci0.11.0
ed0: address 00:20:18:57:eb:e7, type NE2000 (16 bit)
