I am Italian and I have happily downloaded ports from all over the world, eg from the following: "Russia 3" (ftp4.ru.FreeBSD.org ...) "Russia 4" ... "Australia 1" (ftp2.au. ...) "Australia 2" ... Usa,Uk, etc. etc. Traffic may vary with your mileage (even over time ;-) Please note: sometimes the directory structure may change. One trivial example. Some weeks ago, I wanted the Scilab port (math) 2.4.1. In the meanwhile Scilab-2.5 had been "published" by INRIA. As a result, Scilab-2.4.1 had been moved to .../distributions-old. After getting a few ports errors, I went to the ftp site (via the simple, plain ftp program), had a look around and found out the reason for the errors. Then I went to the port makefile and you've already guessed what I did :-) Sometimes even the supposed directory structure might change: the ports mechanism looks for something in .../intermediate_directory/.../distfiles and there is NO .../intermediate_directory/ If you have a look around the world, you will certainly run into this situations, take my word.
