If your motherboard has two com ports, did you disable com2 via the BIOS. If not, it's conflicting with the COM hardware on the plug-in modem. Pull the modem out and then boot FreeBSD or even DOS and see if com2 is detected. Also, do you have jumpers on the modem? Did you check to make sure it's jumpered as COM2 and not 3 or 4??
