I agree -- even with 5.0 due out in a few weeks, 4.7 might be your 
best bet.

Also, it's worth mentioning that although I had similar Xfree 
troubles when
installing 4.7, using the ncurses (sp?) version of the X 
configuration tool
resulted in a working install.
