"no carrier" means that your NIC doesnt "see" the signal from the other side. 
You probably have the wrong type of cable. If you connect to a hub, switch or 
cable modem, you need a "straight" cable, which is the normal kind. If you 
connect one PC or router or server directly into another, you need a 
"crossover". You should see a light go on on your NIC if it "sees" the other 
side.
